First, don’t contact them very often (not at all, if possible).

This is important, because for whatever reason your ex gave you for the break up, the real reason is because they want space away from you or the relationship.

By constantly trying to get a hold of them to understand why they left, or to get closure, or to ask them for another chance, you have to understand that you really aren’t giving them the space that they want. This will just make them push you away even more in an attempt to get space.

Second, don’t sit around feeling depressed.

Break ups hurt. I get that. You should absolutely take time to mourn the loss of your relationship, but don’t turn it into a chronic habit.

Sulking around at home isn’t going to get you very far and it sure as heck isn’t going to make your ex miss you or want to get back together with you.

A lot of people have this belief that if they can just get their ex to feel guilty about hurting them, that it will somehow make them want to get back together.

Whether you got dumped or you did the dumping, breaking up is still awfully painful. There are no meds to take the pain away, but following some simple break up rules, things won’t hurt so badly.

Step 1: Acceptance. The biggest mistake you can commit after the break up is to pretend that it didn’t happen. If it’s over, it’s over. If you break up for a reason and getting back together isn’t an option, you need to move on. Not accepting that fact will only prolong the pain and agony. Yes, it’s a lot to take in all at once and may take awhile before everything sinks in, but the sooner you come into terms with it, the faster you will heal. Maybe, you will try to figure out how to get your ex back and read articles about “how to get your ex back,” the truth is, it is unlikely to see your ex crawling back to you; or you, crawling back to your ex.

Step 2: Feel the pain. It is okay to give yourself time to mourn. It is okay to cry, overeat, drink a little, and write some poems (but don’t ever publish it online). You will be better off sad than bottling it all up. A few days to a week are all you need. If you are still in PJs after a couple of months, you are allowing life to pass you by. Mourning should never be permanent.

You even forget to do things you really love. Now is the time to reconnect with all of them. Do not sit on your room all day. Go out with your friends and family, dig in to your hobby, go to the gym, and play some sports. The more you are busy, the more you get your mind off the break up.

Step 5: Let go… completely. You might have been enjoying your new life with your friends and family but you may find yourself trailing back to your painful breakup memories. Let all these bad thoughts go and replace them with good ones. There is no use in keeping excess baggage forever.

Step 6: Let time heal the wounds. The pain will not last forever. Sooner or later, every painful memory will simply disappear. If it still doesn’t, hang in there – it will get easier.

Break up depression really stems from holding onto ideas about what should or shouldn’t have happened and not living in the moment. It can take a bit of time to overcome the inclination to focus on negative aspects of your life. You need to be positive in your thinking and with your awareness. This is absolutely critical. Watch you thinking and see what you’re focusing your mind on that is causing you to feel bad.

Try to avoid keeping any sort of things around that remind you of your ex or your relationship. These sorts of things only make you long for the “good days” and leave you feeling a void in your life. If you have to, box them up and store them away for the time being. This will give you the mental space you need to heal and focus on positive things in your life.

Get your friends on board to help you in your recovery from your break up. Many times feelings like depression can creep in when we feel isolated from others. By keeping a close knit group of friends in your life, you can start to bounce back from your break up faster that before.

You and your friends can together build happy memories together and foster a closer relationship. Not only will they help you recover from a break up, but they will also help you see that life isn’t all doom and gloom. Plus, you’ll be building a different sort of relationship–a friendship.

You can also get out and make new friends and meet new people. Go and do things that you’ve been putting off for a while now. Maybe you can go and join a few groups or classes for things that you’ve been interested in for some time now. Or maybe you can get involved in community events to meet new people. But either way, making new friends will help you broaden your horizons and focus your mind on seeing this phase of your life as a stage of growth rather than a stage of loss.

So, remember to move your life in a positive direction. You can change the way that you see this chapter of your life by consciously choosing to make it one of growth and positivity rather than one of collapse and negativity.
